Oliver 77 doesn't crank

I just rebuilt the engine and it barely turns over so I took the starter and battery to town and they checked out ok. I replaced the cables and push button solenoid. It is 6 volt. Does anyone have any ideas? Is it cuz the engine is new?

Could be. I overhauled a 77 one time that was so tight we had to tow start if for quite a while after that. I'd had the crank turned and got new bearings for the size they said they had turned it. I took the whole engine back to the machine shop. They insisted they were the right bearings and wouldn't do anything about it. Every rod cap I'd put back on,it'd get a little tighter. Towing it for a while was all I could do.

The diesel starter on ebay with gear reduction have a lot more power to turn the engine over than your gas starter and they should fit a 77 as I put one a 1550 gas and all the modification
I had to do was to reroute the gas line I just put a flex line in with an inline filter. The starters sold by real electric run around $130.

When I put 3 3/4 sleeves and Pistons in my 66 I had to go to 12 volts to get it started, still using the 6 volt starter.

We typically have issues cranking our engines when they are first rebuilt, it has always been caused by piston ring drag in the cylinder bores. This will typically will be resolved by working the engine and getting it up to operating temperature. That being said, all of our tractors have been updated to 12 volt with alternators, using the stock 6 volt starters.

I had a similar situation after a rebuild, had to tow it to get it to turn over, ran it real slow after it started as the bearings had to be real tight, ran for a couple of hours at low rpm, then it would start fine,

I hooked the starter and coil up to 12v via a resistor. It runs good. Now I have to decide think about converting the rest of it or wait and see if it will crank on 6v after it breaks in. Thanks again for the help.

If you change it,go with a 12 volt generator off a diesel or a little bit newer tractor, not an alternator. The 12v generator will bolt right up to the original brackets and the wiring will hook up the same to the 12v regulator. The hood sides will close right too. I've got one off a 1600 on my 77 and one off an older diesel on my 66.

Thank you. I have a 770 diesel that I need an engine for. I will check and see if there is a generator with it.
