1365 brakes

What's involved in changing the brake bands on a 1365? Do I have to pull the axles, take off the top cover? Both? Neither?

Just pull the final drive off at the rear end housing. Brake drum comes with the final drive. Loosen the brakes first. Careful with the final drive, it's about as coordinated as a newborn baby giraffe, and similar in weight. From there it's all right in front of you. Rick Stair was able to get me all the new replacement parts I needed.

Let us know how it goes I have an Allis Chalmers 5040 that I'm going to need to put brakes in about the same rear and set up only the brake bands are a little narrower than the 1365.

So just the drop box out at the end of the axle housing then? Or the whole housing where it bolts to the side of the rear end?

Unbolt the whole housing at the rear end, axle slides right out with the final drive. No need to unbolt the large casting that holds the large final drive gears. There is no gasket where you unbolt it, the brake cavity is dry. There is a seal on the axle that keeps the oil in the final drive when you pull it apart. Not at home or I would send you some pics.

Thanks Mitch. If you'd post those pictures when you get a chance I'd appreciate it. Sounds like if I just take the wheel off and hang the axle housing on the cherry picker then. I don't know when I'll get around to it. I need to get the clutch in and get it slid back together first.
According to Rick's website,he's on vacation through the 27th anyway. I'm surprised at the number of parts I've been able to get for it right through the new local Agco dealer.

Randy, I'll be gone a few days, so take a look at this old post.

If you scroll down to the pic that has the rear end housing sitting on blocks by itself, you can see where the final drive bolts to the rear end. Brake band sits inside that cavity, brake drum and axle slide into it.

Taking the tire off and using a cherry picker is exactly how I removed mine. Once you remove the bolts around the axle the final drive will try to spin downward so you want it supported good at the beginning. To help keep it stable, I took one of the final drive casting bolts out and ran a chain back through it, then used another chain on the smaller axle end. It is pretty heavy, and unstable, so you have to keep an eye on it. I have a pretty cheap cherry picker, and it was a little tipsy, yours may be better. I block everything, probably too much, but I prefer not to be squashed if it's avoidable.
