I am purchasing a 1959 Cockshutt 540. I have conflicting info on the engine size. It is a Continental, Lhead, but is it 140 or 162 cubic inches? Also what horsepower is it putting out? Thanks for any info.

According to my IT manual, it is a Continental F162, which is 162 CID. I believe that the 140 is the same block, just with sleeves for a smaller bore. This engine was used in a lot of tractors of that era including the Silver Kings and Massey Harris'.

My books say there was no Nebraska test on this model Cockshutt but the manufacturers estimate was 31 pto hp and 26 on drawbar.
