1550 Oliver oil filter

I have just purchased a 1550 diesel that has been sitting for 5 yrs, the previous owner states it ran when parked (outside). I have knowledge that the tractor is (was) in great shape when parked except for the 2 speed leaking. I want to change oil & filter before attempting to start, their is diesel in the tank and filter and smells ok. Any and all info on what to do prior to starting (and after) is greatly appreciated, this is my 1st diesel
ever owned. I would like to know the oil filter number and where to purchase one if possible (it's a spin on). Thanks for any and all info. greatly appreciated.

Wait for John Schweibert to reply. There is something to check on the injector pump before you start it. I think the diesels use the same oil filter and the gas. NAPA 51050, Wix 1050, Fram PB50.

1550 will have the Stanadyne-RoosaMaster injection pump, not the American Bosch PSB, which is a plus. I'd loosen all the injector line nuts, and tap the lines so the tapered ermeto end will pop loose at the injector. While cranking the engine as if trying to start see if the pump gives a shot of fuel at each injector. If so it should run after all the nuts are tight. If no fuel at all the most likely the rotor plungers are stuck. I've been seeing a lot of pumps in that condition after they have set awhile. A complete tear down and cleaning gets them working fine on the test bench in most cases.

Could you please explain how I can check that the pump isn't locked up before I possibly do damage. Any and all info is greatly appreciated and thanks for replying.

Remove the two screw timing cover on the injection pump side, when the fuel stops running out look at the front/radiator side of the opening to see if the timing mark plate moves while someone turns the engine BY HAND! If you see the plate move drive shaft is good, no movement means it's broke. If you have questions feel free to call me at five seven four eight three five 3292.

Thank you so very much for your gracious help, I am so very thankful for your offer of assistance and help, will pursue tomorrow (today is the Lords day). Have a great day and a better tomorrow. Thanks again

While you are turning the engine to do what Diesel Tech said, put a mark on the front pulley and turn the engine over 2 full turns to make sure it is free. If you want to take another step take the valve cover off and check to see if any exhaust valves stuck open while it set.

Thanks for the additional info. and will definitely turn the engine over by the method you suggested. I have in past years (gas engines) poured Marvel Mystery oil in the spark plug holes to free up stuck engines, have no clue what to do for a diesel engine if frozen (crossing fingers engine is free). Again, thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated.

Mr J. Schwiebert, I was able to freely turn the engine over with compression in cylinders (quite a bit) by hand and could here the valve rotating, don't know how many tho. I am in search of a valve cover gasket to replace to check for exhaust valves possibly stuck before trying t start it, any idea where I may find one? Thanks for your help, it's greatly appreciated.

Mr Dieseltech, I was able to check the shaft as you described And it is rotating (I had fingers, toes, teeth and all other body parts crossed). Thanks for the help, I hope to find a valve cover gasket to check the valves before trying to start. I am going to try Maibach in Chreston, Ohio tomorrow, they seem to deal in a lot of Oliver parts, if you know of any other locations, please share. Thanks for you help and all others who have been so generous in sharing your knowledge. To all, have a great day and a better tomorrow.

I removed the timing cover and now it is leaking, is their a gasket available or a material to make one from? Thanks for any and all info.
