We baled with the 1550 today. She did OK and didn't complain too much. Couldn't hear me over the gear noise, though. And being used to the A, when I yelled to stop she went for the PTO lever.

Atypical Oliver whine that the most Olivers are noted for up through the 1555 series?

Or something else going on?

The 1600's on up are quieter from the Oliver whine standpoint.

1550 and 1555 still had the carry over spur gears of the 770 and 880 tranny design. The 770 and 880 only had a thin piece of sheet metal covering the rear end driveline. The Oliver whine carried and resonated off that sheet metal pretty noticeably. The 1550 and 1555 at least have some heavy cast iron around the rear end and no thin sheet metal covers. Due to that Some claim they do not hear the whine....others do say they still hear the whine.

The 1600 on up had helical gears and much quieter in regards to the Oliver whine. Spent many an hour in the seat of a 1800A gasser straight 6 speed tranny (no hydropower) in my youth. It had no Oliver whine.

I think we need a set of those radio headsets that motorcyclists use. That way she can tell me what to do the whole time in stead of when we stop. 'Nuff said.
