1755 engine-Waukesha or Perkins?

I am going to look at a 1755 dsl. with clutch and possible engine problems. It would be used for spraying, disk mower, haybine ect. I have had a 1955 and 1650 so I am aware of the merits and demerits of a Waukesha as well as the updates needed to make them reliable. I have the ability to rebuild the engine myself. I also have an 1850 dsl. tub so a Perkins is another option. I would not be afraid of the 310 done properly but the 354 is just about bullet proof and would make it equal to a 2-85 and is a better looking tractor. Just wondering which way would make more sense.

Well if you are going to use the 1850 engine mounts you will need to find a pan and front cover from an 1850 engine. If you want a Perkins I would go with a later 354 like at least a Dot 1 engine as there are many improvements and you will have fewer oil leaks. My 2 cents worth. J.

we bought an 1850 once because the trans locked up in ours so I do have some of the conversion parts, on the other hand the 310 is a snappy, nice running engine that would be adequate for what I want to do with it

Another option if you are not afraid of crimes against nature is a Deere 359. They are fairly plentiful. It was done by one of my old customers and they seem to be happy about it. If you have an 1850 tub a Cummins 5.9 will fit and have more power and burn less fuel than the 354.
