hi guys. just wondering if this was actual a legitment direct replacement engine. the 5.9 cummins wasn't even built then. does anyone have any hard evidence to support this. thanks

They were not a replacement engine at the time the tractors were built but came on a package deal to upgrade many of the Olivers used in our area. For the potato and vegetable growers, the Olivers were preferred with the 3 speed shift on the go. Ads were placed in the trade magazines showing the Oliver 1855 repowered with a Cummins 5.9. The ad of course showed a brand new tractor. This was a package put together by Cummins and offered by the Cummins dealerships in north central WI. When I went to look at the one they had repowered, I was told over the phone that it doesn't quite look like the one in the picture. They had taken an old beat up 1855 and repowered it. Eventually bought it but it took 3 years to get the pricing right. John Deere also offered a repower package using one of their engines in an Oliver 1855. Not as popular as the Cummins package.

I should add, the repowered I ended up purchasing had a 1992 Cummins sitting in a 1971 Oliver 1855. Still have it today and it still runs like a top, still needs a paint job and some tin repair though.

JI Case and Cummins designed the 3.9/5.9 and 8.3 engines as a joint venture known as the Consolidated Diesel Corporation, the first tractor that I am aware of to use the 5.9 was the 18/2096 Case tractors starting around 1984
