310 lift pump

Any ideas why some 310's had lift pumps and some didn't? Put a 1955 engine in my 1950T and seems like its starving for fuel at startup and idle. No lift pump on this engine. Runs good at higher RPM's. Pump has been gone through and has new injectors.
Thanks

310 all had lift pump to my knowledge but they do not need them I by passed one of my 1955 . The tank has enough gravity flow to supply the injection pump .make sure you have good fuel flow to your injection pump fuel should run out the diameter of your steel line. Did the pump get flow tested on the bench when it was rebuilt it will also tell you the condition of the pump HEAD? IS there fuel to the head of the pump ? Our the injectors spray paternity good and crack at right pressure? Is the pump tidied right?

If it's starving for fuel it will show up at high speed , full load when the maximum fuel delivery is used. It may sound different at idle because of the injection pump advance curve. Several tractor over the years that used Roosa-Stanadyne pumps were gravity fed, and worked well. AC, Ford, IH, MM, Oliver all had some models that way..

If you need to reassure yourself, take a low pressure gauge (0 to 100 psi) and see what your transfer pump pressure is. What degrees do you have the engine timed too as they changed that years ago.
