Oliver 88 PTO Shaft

I am having trouble getting the PTO shaft re-installed in my 1952 Oliver 88 diesel. It goes in almost all the way but end bearing is still standing 1-2" proud of the clutch mounting sleeve. It still spins freely so I am guessing it hasn't engaged the clutch but I am not sure if the hydraulic pump is holding it up, or the clutch. Any tricks to getting the shaft in? Thanks.

I read the post twice. It sounds like you think the splines at the front of the shaft go in to the clutch?
It goes in to a hub. Just keep turning it a little at a time while pushing and pulling it in and out until it slips in to the splines in the pump drive, then you will probably have to feel your way in to the splines in the hub. Just keep working at it.

One other thought that came to mind. Are you sure you're turning the shaft or just the PTO clutch housing? You might have to wedge something between a clutch disc and a plate.

I am turning the PTO shaft itself. Seems as though it should be pretty straight forward but I will stay after it.

Why did you have the shaft out? If you worked on the hydraulic pump, did you put the drive sleeve in backwards?

Shaft was out to replace the center section of the pump. Good thought about the position of the drive sleeve, I will check that out. Thanks.

I believe that I put the drive in backwards. The gear half was towards the rear, should be towards the front. Everything slides right in place when it is correct!
