am i on the right track 1800 gas

have a Oliver 1800 gas.. starts good..when I increase the throttle it stumbles. I can get it thru the stumble by pulling the choke. when i get it to higher speed i have continuously work the throttle to try and keep it going. I removed the carb tonight an thoroughly cleaned. didn't seem to bad. While I have it apart, should I adjust the float to raise the level in the bowl?

This is a carb issue..u think?

Thanks

Did you measure the float level? Is this an 1800 A B or C series? Does it have an aluminum carburetor? Does the tractor have a fuel pump? Need more details hers:

I measured it but i am ashamed to say i don't know what it is suppose to be so i made it level when the top 1/2 is turned upside down. The carburetor is cast not aluminum. I think along time ago, based on the serial number i posted it is an A ( gosh, now that I think about it I think I got that from you). I am not near the tractor but I think it has a mechanical pump- I will verify in the AM.

I have always been amazed at your knowledge of the Oliver line.

first thing to do with old stuff is make sure there is no debris plugging something up. Most things use some sort of container filled with gas for the gas in the machine and not straight from the pump. lot of crap gets brought along. The design idea of putting the filler hole on top of the tank doesn't help either. Having seen your problem before my first step would be to remove the glass bowl filter from the tank and clean ever thing out. You probably have something stuck in the neck of the filter, removing just the bowl won't do it, has to be removed from the tank. The last thing on those old machines is to open the carb.

Could be a bad mechanical pump, removing the line at the carb and cranking the engine a bit with the end in a glass container while watching is a way to see if it's pumping, it should be an impressive stream (means you'll let go of the key quickly). :) A new pump isn't expensive and that old one deserves a rest anyways.

Everything you touch has been that way for a while, putting them back together almost always ends in a seal that leaks.Make sure you can get the seals before doing anything.

If your carb is like my MS 37 the float is almost the size of the bowl. I had an old Oliver mechanic rebuild mine after doing it myself, we both complained how tight the thing was. It's also an odd ball float at a ridiculous cost, another reason to leave it go till last.
