What's the special?

I've had this 1850 for a year or so. This morning, a neighbor Oliver owner asked me what the "Special" on the hood means. I'd just assumed most of them say that. So, what's it about? :)

Thanks.

There was also a 1750 special. They did not have dual hydraulics and only had a single valve for a remote cylinder. They were made to compete with the 4000 John Deere and IH had a version as well.

The JD 4000 was built from 1969 to 1972 which was not a time of high commodity prices but was not considered a time of financial distress either. My suspicion was that the 4000 was built to compete against the AC 190XT which carried a significantly lower selling price than the 4020. Quite a few farmers used price as a chief criteria back then and there were always farmers who did so as well. AC's sold well on small dairy farms and/or on farms that were in hill country. Generally in areas where farming was tough economically and price dictated all decisions.

50 series were not built in the 70's, the 50 series specials were a strip down version to be sold cheaper, pressed steel wheels ect. if i remember correctly, jd had the 4000 and IH had the Customs ,all were intended to be price competetive

Oliver was most likely responding to AC as well as the 190XT came out around 1967 or so.

Yes they had three points. Arms were different. Like John Deeres with the enclosed ball, not the clamps like the other 50 series tractors. Used the same pump as the other tractors. Believe the loader tractors had a different hydraulic pump. My brother has a 1750 Special. Original owner put another outlet on it.

There is a Sales Note 433 610 on the 1750 & 1850 Specials dated July 1969.   Both models were built in diesel only, no Hydrpower drive or O/U drives.   The suggested list price, $7662.00 for the 1750 Special, $8260.00 for the 1850 Special.

There was a very original 1750 at the Hart-Parr Oliver Winter meeting in Wilmington, OH this past March.

there used to be a couple of IHC 856 specials around here, tin work was not made the same, had smaller tires on them than standard 856, a few other things were different too, unfortunately memory doesn't work so I can't list all the differences.
