Cockshutt 40 hydraulic system

Where does the hydraulic oil get filled, how much and what oil on a Cockshutt model 40 tractor? It is also a Perkins diesel motor, but I don't think that matters as the unit looks the same as my 50.

Hi John,

The system holds 6.5 quarts. Fill at the plug near the top front the steel cover of the under the seat hydraulic unit. The original Cockshutt Hy. oil spec. is #10 non-detergent ENGINE OIL.

On your 40-PD there is a replaceable hy. filter inside the steel cover.

Thanks for the reply and the info. I tried to work a hydraulic cylinder last week and nothing happened, I hope it just is in need of some fluids. How big a job is it to change that filter in the unit? I have a filter , but never have tackled that process.

Hi John,

The filter is an easy change. It is inside the steel oil reservoir cover Remove the 4 acorn nuts on top of the cover and pry up carefully all around the base of the cover, after removing any significant oil in the reservoir.
