1650 hydraulic cover

Just remembered. Last week when I removed the hydraulic cover from the neighbors 1650, oil sprayed from under the cover onto my shirt. We had just shut off the tractor. But now as I think about it there shouldn't have been any pressure there, should it?

The remote valves with their pilot operated check valves are in the cover. If they doing what they were designed to do pressure is nearly always trapped there from oil being in the hoses and passages between the remote couplers and the check valves. At one time I think there was a kit to install tee fittings in the lines to the remote couplers, a small petcock type valve into the tee and small return line back into the reservoir, opening the petcock would bleed the trapped pressure and make it easier to connect the remote couplers, John Schwiebert may remember it and possibly have a service bulletin on it.

90 per I had those on my 1800 but they had no place for a line to go, just sprayed oil all over me no matter where I stood

I mentioned in my post about returning to the reservoir. I don't remember the details of the kit but I would never let them drain any where but back into the reservoir. High pressure fluid is dangerous if you are exposed to it. There are pipe plugs on the reservoir that can be used to return the fluid back to where it belongs. Just need a few fittings.

You DO know that top hyd. system also contains oil reservoir.. aprox 7 gal. of oil.. needs to be drained before opening unit for service. There is a pan between hyd. unit and rearend. Please drain this oil properly before servicing unit/rearend/ etc. been there/done that!

O. K. To service the valves which are in the cover you do not need to drain the unit. To service the servo valve you need to drain about half the oil out. You do not need to unhook the linkage to remove the servo valve but have the 3 point all the way down before you attempt to remove it. To answer 90%'s question there was a kit BUT only for the tractors that had the wheatland/industrial style hydraulic systems. Yes the pilot operated check valves keep pressure trapped so the load does not settle with the tractor off. The answer is the Pioneer couplers that couple under pressure.
