18 and 1950 problems

Need some help, have 2 1850's and a 1950 t, on the one 1850 everything in the hydraulics works fine the other and the 19 I can't get the baler door to shut unless I hook the remotes what I consider backwards and the 19 is slower than molasses in picking up a haybine. I have turned in out and everywhich way I can to no avail. I am asking on here as my dad is no longer available to guide me through fixing the problem. Now for the confusing part for me the 18 where the hydraulics work has an over under, under works and over works but it will not hold back in direct and I don't understand what has happened, it will eventually get torn down but not at the moment is there something I can do to rectify this problem.

I figured that I would have to pull the top and find the leak. Now with that said on the hydraulics what has caused the over under to lose the hold back in direct.

The hydraulics have nothing to do with the o/u unit. It has it 's own pump and is a self contained unit. Are the restrictor screws for the remotes adjusted correctly? You need to read the owners book. Oliver hydraulics are about the biggest cluster f#%k that I have ever seen.

I have read the book forwards and backwards sitting in the shop and standing beside the tractor turning each one as the book says, my dad said I would have to pull the top about a month before he passed on, I was hoping someone might have a clue as to what went wrong before tearing the tractor down. 2)I know the over/under has nothing to do with hydraulics if you will reread the original post you will see that it is on a different tractor. Btw, rr I got your email and will send him one in the next day or so; too much hay down now to worry about it.

How long since the system filters have been changed? A clogged filter will restrict oil flow. You really need a shop manual to diagnose the problem. Worst case scenario is worn out hydraulic pumps.

The over under shift has nothing to do with the hydraulic system. That is a self contained unit. The free-wheeling in the under position is normal. Just the nature of the beast. Some of the other multi-shift units of the day free-wheeled in the low position also.

I have been through the manual to exhaustion, I have decided the top will have to come apart but just was hoping. As for the over/under I know that low is free wheeling just don't understand how direct went that way it will only hold back in over which isn't how it should be, not to be a mule but we have had the one 185 0 for all 48 of my years and the other one for 27 years now so I am sure they just need some attention. I appreciate the responses. I will tell the fixes when I get them torn down and find the problems. Btw, the first one arrived in May of '68; I arrived in June so we have been together for a few years.

sounds like your dad had something figured different than you're trying and the reason is you saying you think it's backwards, but it also sounds like he knew it wasn't working right.

I would start at the simplest and go from there. How's it work with other implements? Could be the couplings aren't working right.

Just fixed something someone did 7 years ago, they'd always thought something wasn't right, the lines to the unit were crossed and everything was operating backwards. Still operated, what they thought was hot was cold and cold hot, they made a point of always using cold, for 7 years they'd been using hot.
