66 alternator question

Hello,we have a 66 Oliver that was converted to 12
volt,we converted it back to 6 but we didn't have
much luck getting it to roll fast enough to start with a
deep cycle battery and new heavy cables so we
hooked it back to 12. Currently we're using a delco
alternator but the side hood will not close,is there an
alternator available close to the original size of the
generator? Also would there be anything else we
could try if we tried it back on 6v? We replaced the
piston rings and head gasket and local guys have
suggested that the engine may be too tight now and
might not start easily on 6 because of it?

I have a 12 volt generator on my 66 and 77 both. The diesels had them and so did all the late Supers, three digits and four digits up through 65. They'll all bolt right up and you don't have to alter the original 6 volt wiring harness at all.

One other thing that just crossed my mind. You said you used heavy cables. Where do you have it grounded? If it's grounded up under the dash where they originally were, that's part of the problem. Use a longer cable and ground right to one of the starter bolts. That original location caused them to have to have the cowl grounded to the frame. Where it was bolted to the frame would get rusted just a few years after they were new and started having problems almost right from the start.

Thank you very much for the reply,it is grounded under the dash,I'll do some hunting for a 12volt generator first because I like the quick start up for now but when painting is in the budget I may reconsider going back to the original 6. Thank you very much again

Not a problem,it was to me by my fil as he thought it might help, possibly a regular battery would have been better

I have had a couple of 6 volt Gens. converted to 12 volt, also I think a company is making 12 volt alts.that look like gens.for auto. restorations.

I have an alternator on my 1951 66 with 3 3/4 Pistons , 6 volts wouldn't cut the mustard, esp if warm. My alt has the voltage regulator separate, it's a small Delco , had to fold down the vertical support on side panel for about 4 inches, side bulges a little bit, and the alternator is against the motor also, real tight putting alt belt on, and I'm still using 6 volt starter too.
