1650 hydraulics need help

I've replaced the hydraulic pump on my neighbor's tractor. I just set hydraulic unit on the tractor and reconnected everything. Now I can't get engine to turn over to start it. I've tried 200 amp battery charger and I've tried jumping it off with another tractor but sounds like something has motor locked down. It'll grunt but that's it. Tractor started fine before the repair. If I pull it off to start it could I damage something? I don't want to pull top off again!

You have already probably checked the starter drive. If not, I would loosen up the starter bolts and may sure it is not locked against the ring gear.
Done quite a few of those replacements and I can not think of anything that you did that lock up the hydraulics.

The more I think about it I would pull the starter and check out. Check for a stuck brush,
continuity in the field windings, etc.
Also, try putting a tire iron in the starter hole and try spinning the ring gear and see if it will turn.

Does this pump change mean removal of gear shifter by any chance? If so you probably goofed when replacing it.

Selecting two gears at once maybe?

Gears seem to shift fine as before.if it was in gear wouldnt tractor try to move when engaging the starter? I don't understand.

Did the cover drop right down with no resistance? Don in Wisconsin had that happen with his 1600 a couple of years ago. His was the first time I ever heard of it happening, but he said he got the gears sitting right one on top of the other on top of the cogs instead of meshing together.

Engage the PTO clutch and try to turn the PTO shaft with a pipe wrench. If it won't turn, lift the top cover up a little and try again.

Could the new pump be tight? If you pull the PTO shaft, draw it out till the flywheel splines engage the pump drive gear and see if you can turn the pump with the shaft. I'd think if the gears were not meshed the housing wouldn't set down on the main case.

The cover dropped right down with no problem. I took a socket wrench and turned the engine with no problem. Upon further thought I remembered that we had to pull the tractor off to start it at the neighbors house but when i put it in my shop the next day it jumped off just fine. So I will try the pipe wrench on the pto shaft and pull start it with the truck.
Thanks rrlund
