1655 brakes

my brakes are pretty crappy on my 1655. I have yet to try and adjust anything but how hard is it to replace the discs? is this a wet system or dry? thanks in advance.

It's a dry system and they are fairly easy to replace. Sometimes the linings just get glazed over and if you wire brush the crap off of them the linings work fine again. Make sure the actuation balls are clean, rust free and lubed well. Make sure the springs are in good shape. Never-seize is your friend. Use it on everything that turns, moves or is threaded. Also make sure you adjust the brakes for quite a lot of travel until you have used them for a day or so. If you get fresh brakes adjusted too tight, the first time you go down the road the friction will get them so hot they will lock up. Losta smoke, lotsa stink!

These brakes are easy to work on. For each side you take the brake housing cover off (round cast-iron plate w/3 bolts) and you'll see the outside disk. That disk will slide right out. The other disk is behind the actuator assembly. Get the actuator assembly out and other disk out, then there is an oil seal. If you're brake housing inside and disc assembly is oily -- then the seal is leaking. Think about replacing other small parts as well. Seal is ~$25, (2) disks are ~$18 each, (5) balls ~$2 each, (3) springs ~$9 each. Get yourself a repair manual while your at it.

Don, that brings back old memories to me. Did just what use said not to do. Changed discs one time years ago and did not clean old grease and hay off enough. Took it for a spin and
just as I pulled back in the driveway a pretty good fire was going down there. Good thing it near a water hose.

I burned all the paint off the cover on one side on the 1850 one time. Didn't start a fire, but sure stunk to high Heaven.
