I have an Oliver 1550 that I have now put five coils in redid the Point's new spark plugs new wires cap and rotor and the tractor will run for an average of 4 hours at a time and the coil go out every time almost like it gets a surge of energy power and then kills it so I put a regulator on there so that it's only pushing 6 to 8 volts through but now it melted my points and I don't know what to do I also put in a new coil and readjusted the points and now the tractor will not start any suggestions would be awesome thank you

Its a 12v coil and it says to use external
resistor, the dealer said thats the one from
factory, didnt come with a 6v coil

Do you still have the resistance wire or ballast resistor between "I" terminal on the switch and the input to the coil? This resistance should be approximately equal to resistance across the + and -- posts on the coil. Sounds like resistance wire may have been replaced with a plain wire. This would cause excess current and burn the points and coil.

On mine the resistor wire is gray and very flexible. I found it in the taped section that runs from the dash the engine under the fuel tank on the right side. It's longer than the section of harness and was doubled up inside the tape.

Theres a bunch of wires cobbled together of different gauges. But there is no resistor between the negative side of coil to distributer. The resistor is before coil then the resistor to the positive side of coil
