Hello Again Forum:
Just bought a '63 550 olvier-gas.
Has anyone out there used a maschio mdl.155L. 62" tiller on the same tractor? Looks like the HP on my tractor is at the bottom end of the req.'d range.

And does anyone know anything about that tiller regarding durability/ruggedness and effectivenss.

I have heard others around here say Land Pride is a good brand, but the Maschio is for sale... so just wandering.

Thanks

Well, I'll give you my experience in hopes that it will help you out. I run an 80" Howard behind my 880 (overbored, high compression pistons, bigger carb). And although it does get the job done, the tractor really isn't up to the challenge. It more struggles with weight although more power would sure be nice. So figure I have at least 60% more tractor (55 pto horsepower vs 33 pto horsepower) and I only have 25% more tiller (80" verses 64").

We have good loam soil here so if you are in lighter soil, you might be better off. Depending upon how much tilling you want to do, you might be happier with a smaller offset tiller.

I use a 60" Howard Rotovator on both an Oliver 550 (1967) as well as on a 1962 Cockshutt 550. Both tractors handle the tiller just fine but don't attempt to start tilling sod. It will shake the #$%^ out of the tiller.
A neighbor has a Maschio and it is much lighter (in weight only, not construction) than my Howard, but the Italain tillers have a very good reputation for durability. He puts the Maschio on a Kubota and he, like me, tills garden loamy soil (not sod) and he likes it just fine.

Hi Doug and e. What would you use to get a seed bed started - for breaking up the sod? With a Super 55 or a 550, I mean? I also have a 1255 but not sure it has any more power.

We used to run a 6 foot heavy duty landpride tiller behind a 69 gas 550. Didn't have any problem pulling it. The tractor was just light on the front because the tiller was a heavy duty model.

The tractor is also going to be a little bit faster in first gear than you would like. Not as bad as the N Fords (where you had to have a "tiller gear" to even try it), but not as slow as you'd like. You could till sod, if you could get it to go slower.

Great looking 550, by the way.

To get a new garden started I use a 2 furrow plow to turn over the sod, let it dry a day or two then go in with the tiller. If you have a disk you could use it before the tiller, this would reduce the grass & root clumps. I think you would get even better result by letting the furrows dry out for a week, but at spring planting, time is in short supply.

Ditto to Mike WA comments. Very nice looking 550. Would like some close up pics on the downward pointing exhaust. Thinking of doing that with my 2nd 550 due to trees in food plots.

Thanks very much folks for your comments and help.
ShepFL-wanting exhaust pics--will be glad to forward once i get the tractor, have other pics from previous owner but none show the exhaust details. It is scheduled for delivery here next Fri, by Dan Solt (advertises on the YT forum). Once i get the tractor i will take and forward several pics for you.

On the tiller-- i need one to control bermuda grass in my small pecan orchard with sandy lome. Grow my pecans organically thus no herbacides used, and that is the only way i'v found that will control the grass.

e:
An offset tiller allows one to use a 'narrower than tractor' tiller and still cover one of the tire tracks?

Any recommendations out there on the brand/model? And are all gear tillers more rugged/reliable than those with chains?

I'm also interested in how that exhaust is routed. Wife doesn't like the exhaust blowing in her face when she's raking hay. I've contemplated rerouting the exhuast down low but not in a way that is going to get in the way or that can't be reversed.

Shepfla,
tried sending you some pics of the exhaust, as requested (shepfla @ gmail --- with and without spaces before and after @, no go ) can you verify the email address?

d page how did the Oliver550 work with the tiller? can you send me an email or PM? I'd like to talk to you more about this. I'm thinking about doing the same thing and wondering how things went.

Thanks,
Frank
