Starter hanging up

1973 Oliver 550. New starter last year. Yesterday when I started the tractor the starter hung up and would not disengage from the flywheel. I could hear it grinding inside so I shut it off. Disassembled the starter and found the starter drive spring over-twisted. Replaced the spring today, tried it again. Same thing, starter hung up and ruined another drive spring.
What should I be looking for?

Are you sure the ring gear on the flywheel is in good shape? I had to take the ring gear off my old style 88 standard and flip it
around because the starter was hanging up on the beat up ring gear. Now it is fine.
