update on 1850 diesel

I took the exhaust manifold off and discovered the popping is coming from the rear port, cylinders 5 and 6. I pull the injectors from those cylinders and tested them to be sure, they both sprayed nicely. Where do I go now? Check the valves? What am I looking for? Thanks

Sprayed nicely at what pressure? I'd probably be checking the compression in those two cylinders also. I've had bent push rods in mine too, so check them. Look closely at the rack when you set the valve lash for any adjusters that are way different than the rest, could indicate a worn cam lobe or bent push rod.

Where next? Prove it is, indeed , those two pots by exchanging those two injectors with another pair of pots? No subjectivity involved then.

Compression test would indicate a leaking head gasket or possibly isolate the troublesome pot.

Could be all manner of things from a broken valve spring, bent or rubbish pushrod, sticking valve, to a worn out cam. Not difficult to diagnose it with the valve cover removed, I would have thought.

Have you thought of air in your fuel system somewhere. I had an old D8 CAT that had the same symptoms. It banged around and missed at low engine rpm's with no load applied. However, when pushing hard and at a light load it hit on all six. The bad cylinders showed low exhaust temps when pushing and idling.

I had an old experienced CAT mechanic replace a couple of fittings and new injector lines. After he tightened everything to specs and did a huge sloppy bleed out, I had a happy dozer.

I have the valve cover off and don't see anything bent or broken. The only thing I see is the valve tappet gap is a little tight on #6 exhaust.
