1850 diesel popping

I have a 1850 diesel that will pop maybe once or twice or three times then run fine a few seconds then do it again. Put it under a load such as driving up a decent hill and it smoothes out and runs fine, also it runs better at 1000 to 1100 rpm. I have put the fuel injection pump and injectors from my puller on it so I know they work properly. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Maybe injectors? I've heard of using ATF in the fuel, mix enough in a few gallons to get it warmed up and run for awhile. Then run a full tank of diesel with injector cleaner.

Could it be as simple as the fuel filter? Had a Hesston tractor one time did the same thing. Changed the filters and boom...purred like a kitty again.

I bought this 1850 last spring the previous owner changed all the filters. It had this problem since then I had the manifold off last summer and didn't notice anything unusual. I thought the injectors where gummy so I ran injector cleaner though it. Finally I decided to swap them with the set I took out of my pulling 1850, those where rebuilt two years before and ran great in that tractor they did however set in a plastic bag since last summer.

Does it start hard or lope when you're coming down the road and slow down to turn in a driveway or anything like that? I've seen those things happen when the little fuel transfer pump goes bad.

At what RPM does it start doing this? The bronze pump drive gear could be worn causing the governor to be jerked around and a strong flutter/pop. This mainly happens at higher Rpm's with no load maybe about 15-1800 rpm's. The short stub shaft between the pump and gear could be worn too.

It starts very well, and it will miss or pop at any rpm it just doesn't do it as much at 1000 to 1100. I replaced the lift pump last summer.

I would pull the pump and see if the drive has a lot of play in it. Ours would pop and fart until under load mainly above 1500 rpm's. Updated the drive and pump to a 2-105 style and the engine now runs smooth at all RPM's. The stub shaft and drive were worn causing the flutter/popping. Does it pop at idle also? Does it smoke some when it pops?

It pops at idle and also smokes when it pops sometimes a little sometimes alot. When I get a chance I'm going to check all the gears that drive the injection pump for play.

Popping could be caused by an injection issue or exhaust valve not opening enough, did you check valve clearances?
