oliver 70 rc

I acquired a rc 70 a few years ago and finally have the time to try to bring it back to life. After weeks of draining fluids, finding tires,
restoring the mag, and rebuilding the carb I started it up and ran it down the lane and back. It ran pretty rough and over heated rather quickly.
But what really worried me was the oil droplets flying out with the exhaust! My face was splattered with oil after the short 5 minute drive. Any
thoughts of the most likely cause? Valves, rings, or all of the above? I believe it has a continental 6 cylinder engine. I would appreciate any
advice! Thanks guys.

You said that it was running "rough" and getting "hot". When you had the mag off and put it back on was it timed right? Or is it a little retarded now? The rough running and hot temp makes me think that the mag is a little retarded when running. I would conjure a guess that the mag is a American Bosch, correct? Does the impulse kick out when it starts, or is it still clicking away when running? I can't think that the mag would be that far retarded while running unless the catch pauls aren't releasing right when running. Hard to diagnose too much over this setting. What did the plugs look like when you took them out after running down the lane and back? What do you have the plugs gapped at? I agree with the stuck rings comment if this had been setting for any length of time.

How rough? Could be a hole in a piston? Excessive crankcase pressure could force oil down the exhaust valve guides! More info needed to make any sensible diagnosis.

i would check compression first & go from there , but i think your going to find it needs an overhaul , yes it is a continental engine ( 6202 ) if i remember right , there not the cream of the crop so to speak either ,i think the block is a casted cyl. type ( no sleeves) , they are also known to crack mostly on left side of block by #6 cyl , if compression is low id say at least youll need new rings & the head rebuilt , i know hastings still makes rings , i think fel-pro still has head gaskets , had a hard time locating engine parts for mine 10 years ago , i do have some used engine parts left from one i parted out , head , crank & misc , if anyone is looking

I have one apart now , definitely has wet sleeves....And cracks between the cyls that supposedly won't bother anything .

Actually they are a very good engine. We have owned ours for about 58 years. Still has the original un-turned crank and sleeves in it. Many hours on it. I got it painted this year.
Last picture is from 1980 home after pulling the 3x12 Cockshutt 8A plow all day. I think the 70 was Oliver's best seller of all time? It resides with 9 other Cockshutt's, a Case VAO and a Massey Pony.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions/advice. I think it may be time to pull the head and start some serious rebuilding. If I were to take this to a head shop, would they be able to restore without having to find old parts? I mean, can they use the existing valves, guides, etc? Do I need to find someone who specializes in old tractors to do the work? I'm not much of a mechanic but I know how things are supposed to work. Thanks for any advice!

no one knows that until the engine is apart, valve trouble was common on a 70 so they could have been replaced at the last valve job or ground too many times and are shot, sleeves can be bored 1/8" to accept Chrysler flat head pistons, they are not a high dollar tractor, I bought one that someone had done a lot of work to and had a fair paint job for $600 after I fixed a few other problems it took awhile to get $1000 out of it
