1650 Thermostat

Dealer wanted about $100 for the t-stat and gasket from Agco. Good thing I was sitting down! Does anyone know of an equivalent from Gates or another source?

Do the aftermarket ones basically adapt it to accept an old chevy style thermostat, 2.625" diameter? Has anyone used one of those. If that's the case, they're cheap, and you can get good quality chevy thermostats to put in there then for very reasonable prices.

I got one at a local parts store for less than $8.00. Can't find the number just now but I searched online and found a Gates number. Parts store crossed it to a Stant. I'll try to find it tomorrow. Same one was used on a lot of Chevy engines.

That's a 283 head, with thermostat and a Chevy thermostat

Yeah, definitely different, but what's with the ones other places are selling like this?

Schwiebert is correct on the thermostat. You need the big original one because the water pump circulates the coolant through the head when it is closed. Notice the large bypass hose on that engine.

Thanks for the replies. I don't want to go cheap on something like this, but I see where All States Ag Parts sells one for $9. The Oliver replacement part number I understand is 010716AB. Does this one look right?

It does appear that the factory style thermostat bypasses the radiator when it's "closed". I'm not sure if that kit from all states would do the same, and if not, I'm not sure of the consequences of not maintaining circulation - even when not at temperature. It may lead to hot spots in the head.

I tried to cross all the numbers I could find on the agco parts book online and couldn't come up with anything. Not sure what to do! I'm now dreading the day where I need one myself!
