Olivers with Detroit Diesel engines

What models did Oliver use the Detroit Diesel engines in? What model engines did they use in which model tractors. This is nothing I need to know, but just am curious. Any idea why they switched to Detroit? What were their alternatives?

Super 99 ,990, 995, 1900, and 1950. This was from C.H. Wendel's Oliver book and I have never seen a 995 lugomatic but they coupled some with Be Ge scrapers.

Not certain why Oliver went to Detroit for certain models. Most likely factors are manufacturing capacity and cost. Possibly also GM's desire to increase market penetration of the Detroit 2 stroke diesels and perhaps Oliver management's desire to offer "something different".

Incidentally the Super 99, 990 and 995 use the Detroit 3-71 (3 cylinders, 213 cubic inches). The 4 digit tractors have the 4-53 (4 cylinder, 212 cubic inches).

Seems to me that the CEO of Oliver at the time was a former GM executive if I remember the story right.

There were a couple of those where I came from that pulled in the olden days, (60s). Les Sims and Virgil Carlisle up in Cass Co. Missouri pulled those and they sounded unique. Carlisle farmed a place about 5 miles from us as the crow flies. More than one night I went to sleep listening to that Detroit rumbling in the distance across the bottoms. gm

In the 50s a guy a few miles away from us had a Super 99 hooked to a irrigation pump for his potatoes. He'd run it all night, and the neighbors complained to the township about the noise, because he run it with a straight pipe. The township told them that they live in a farming area.

Gary, Back in the early 80's I pulled against a Super 99 with our 1950T. It looked terrible but when he opened her up it didn't miss a beat. He beat me and many others and just a couple years ago they painted her all up. I miss pulling with the 1950T!

Oliver went to Detroit 2 strokes for two reasons, their size and power output from the readings I've seen in the past and an employee was an old GM guy.

Like all the tractor companies they also play with experimental tractors. A guy sent my boy a picture of a Super 88 with a 4-51 Detroit and we know there was at least 1 550 built with a 2-53 maybe to compete with the John Deere 435 tractor.
