How Much Would Pay?

Spotted a super nice 1655 Oliver sitting in a shed near a road I went down to an auction stopped by on the way home and talked to the owner. It has around 3000 hrs and he's the 2nd owner used mostly for haying, straight sheet metal, diesel engine starts right up and runs great.I'd really love to have it as its probably about the best one I'll find the owner said he'd think about what he wants for it.So what would be everyone's limit on this one?

If it is as nice as you say, I'd pay anything on the low side of $9,000 it took to bring it home. You've more than likely got another 3,000 hours to go before you even need to consider bearings and rings. The only weak spot in the 283 is that they tended to warp the head if they ran hot. But machining the head and redoing the valves isn't that expensive. I would think you should be able to buy it in the $5,000 range.

Traditional Farmer, I just checked Tractorhouse ads and there least expensive listed was $5000 and it doesn't run! The 1655 is one of my favorite tractors and if you can get it for $6000 in good shape might be a good deal. One of my Oliver buddies has a 1655 pushing 10,000 hours but takes excellent care of it and has checked and changed bearings at 1500 hour interval's. He's a retired dairy farmer now and it only used for hay season. This is a pic of a 1650 283 engine with a failed wrist pin.

I am on the cheap side on offers. If the tires are halfway decent I would go $5500 to $6500.

Where is it located? I would be willing to "inspect" it for you. Might even take it home just to make sure all is well!
