Oliver 66 Top End No Oil

I have assembled a new to me Oliver 66 engine and started it tonight and could not get oil to the rocker arms after running the engine intermittently for about 10 minutes at idle. Here is what I have done;

1) Started with a 66 block and head that had good bearings, good crankshaft, good rocker arms, good oil pump etc. Everything looked to be in good shape.

2) Complete disassembly, power washed bare block, ran brushes through the oil passages and sprayed through oil passages with ether and compressed air. Found that the rod bearing squirters needed extra attention to get them clean. Inspected oil pump, crankshaft etc. all looked good.

3) Assembled engine with new bearings, piston rings, gaskets etc.

4) Filled engine with 10w-40 oil and installed new oil filter.

5) Started the engine with valve cover off and no oil, so poured some oil on the rockers and let it run a little longer (2 min). Oil pressure gage was pegged, but still no oil to the rockers. Disconnected oil line and ran engine a little more, still no oil to rockers.

6) Pulled oil line, oil fitting and head bolt no obstructions found.

7) Reassembled and ran engine for a couple more minutes with oil line disconnected, still no oil.

Garage is cold (30F) and the cooling water never got warm, is it possible I just need to let the engine run long enough to warm up a little?

Any other ideas?

Thanks
Rich

If you unhook the line at the head bolt does oil come out? Does the oil line that goes from the head bolt to the rocker arm shaft enter the rocker arm shaft toward the rear of the shaft or near the center of the rocker arm shaft?

J, is that head bolt hole supplied oil from a true drilled passage to the main galley, or is it supplied by one that comes off the camshaft supply? Been awhile since I looked inside one.

Tip toeing real light here. You've got the bolt in the right hole? Right rear as your sitting on the seat?

No problem, I double checked the Oliver manual and I have that bolt in the hole closest to the flywheel under the valve cover.

Thanks
Rich

Anything is possible, but the top and bottom main are both drilled and I believe them to be interchangeable.

Is that true?

Rich

The top and bottom halves are both drilled. They will fit in either location, but they may not be interchangeable in your bearing set. I have seen that years ago. The top half insert must have 2 holes, one to receive the oil from the oil gallery, the hole which must point straight up while it is the engine to transfer the oil to the hollow head bolt and on to the rocker arms. Pull the pan, loosen the rear main and roll that insert out and check the holes. While it is out remove the hollow head bolt and bow air through it. It should come out in the main bearing saddle. Questions?

There is a plug on the front of the block 1/2 pipe thread I think with a recessed square drive that got left out of my 66 when a machine shop rebuilt my engine. No oil pressure, removed the oil filter no oil there either, removed the timing gear cover and behind timing gear the plug was missing. We were able to replace plug without taking anything else off other than the front cover, good luck.. This all from memory, probably 30 yrs ago. Maybe some one else will chime in on this too.
