1550 3-point again/still

After months of family health problems and other projects I'm finally back to the 1550. The 3-point will not go up or down. Have had the top of the hydraulics open and looked at the servo and changed the pin that John thought could be the issue. The pin looked fine and measured the same as the new on but the new one was installed. Reassembled and it still doesn't work. Now I'm wondering about the control handle. Does it run a shaft inside the tube you can see between the handle and the hydraulic housing? I can't tell if it is actually turning anything and wished now I'd have noticed before putting the top back on the tank. Haven't had a chance to clean that area up and look for set screws (are there any)or is this even a possibility? I'd sure like to finally get this on project off my list. After having the injection pump gone through as well as the injectors I have too much into this thing for it not to be a usable tractor. Any idea(s)where I should go next with a this hydraulic problem?

Take the seat off and just take off the cover that's right under that. You can see the levers and linkages from there. I had something happen one time when I had the whole top off my 1850 and dropped the 3pt cylinder down. There's a linkage in there that has three pins on it that has to be in the right position to make the linkage to the 3pt work right. I ended up having to take the one off my 1550 at the same time in order to see just what position that linkage was supposed to be in. I remember something got flipped over in the wrong position somehow when I dropped that cylinder down.

Is there any reason I couldn't run the tractor with the cover off and look in there to see what is happening (or not happening)?

You will have oil flying all over. There are no set screws, however there is a shaft in there (in the tube) You should see the linkage move. Still have my phone number or e-mail. J.

John I tried today to find your email address. Apparently it didn't get carried over to the new computer. Mine is streissguth@ comcast .net. Please send me an email and I will reply. Thanks. Steve

I want to say I sheared a roll pin off at one point on the control for my 1600. Not sure if it was for the 3 point or remotes, or even how far I had to dig in to fix it. I think it was for the 3 point, and was under the lid under the seat.

I had that happen too, seems the lever didn't go the full distance after that happened, if I remember correctly?

You cannot run the engine with the cover off. The hydraulic pump will pump oil out of the passages in the top and you will have oil everywhere . You will be able to see if the linkage is moving everything as it should with the cover off. Make sure the servo valve plunger is moving in and out when you move the control lever.

By chance did this tractor have a loader on it. I just worked on a 1600 that had been plummed for power beyond which had been removed but they never removed the 3/8 pipe plug and it was blowing relief valve and no 3 point or remotes worked

It's not had a loader since I got it and don't think it ever had one. In any case the 3 point worked when I got it but doesn't now. I've never used it other than to lift a box scraper and only did that once I think. Seemed ok at that point. Then it worked once in a while and now not at all.

I a have a 1965 gas 1550 with the same problem. I replaced the shift rod. Everything worked perfect before, now i have nothing. If you find out what it is please let me know, thanks

Did you accidently break that 1/4 inch elbow that holds the relief valve on the side of the 3pt cylinder when you put the top back on? Did you turn that half inch fine thread bolt out down by your right heel on the bypass valve at any point and forget to turn it back in?

1/4 inch elbow. It screws in to the side of the 3pt cylinder down inside the housing and has a fairly heavy relief valve screwed on to it. Lays horizontal to the cylinder.
Leaves me wondering now if Chief turned that half inch bolt out to get the cylinder out and didn't turn it back in. It has to be loosened to get the cylinder out.

I sent chief and email and mentioned that bypass valve. Have not heard back yet. Thanks for bringing up the safety valve. I'm sure I didn't break mine but I will check it when I reassemble the unit. Here's a picture of what I found in my pump. I took it to a hydraulic shop today. The guy said it looked OK then pulled up the bronze diaphragm. The center area of the gasket is mostly gone. He said that would cause it to lose pressure.
