First of all I would like to thank all of you good folks who always help me out here and for all of the replies this weekend. I worked on the 1650 today and I've come to the conclusion that either the distributor cap is the problem or else my 2 year old patronix ignitor is bad already. Today I was only able to get intermittent spark however it did nearly start twice. Fortunately there were no more fires today. I hope to get a new cap and rotor tomorrow. I can't imagine the ignitor is bad already considering What good luck I've had with them on my other tractors.

check your wires. My last new cap had the numbers super-imposed. Took a long time to get it figured out. I also had a valve keeper come off and made the tractor run real rough with an occasional backfire.

The ignitors of late are junk. I had two go bad in my 88 puller. I finally went back to points. The first one would sometimes not start good, run rough or quit like you shut the switch off only to start right up again. It acted this way from new until it died. Warranty replaced it after doing the checks the tech department at Pertronix requested. The 2nd one just up and died. Neither one lasted more than 2 months. more than one dealer told me they are having a high failure rate and are convinced something was changed though petronix does not admit to any changes. They just sent out a bulletin saying not to use solid core wires. I have one that is 8 or 9 years old with solid core wires and has never given trouble as is the case with many others. So why all of a sudden is the wires a problem?

I had one ignitor set fail out of 10 or so installed. When it failed, it just quit. No spark ever, nothing happening. They replaced it for free.

If you are getting a spark from time to time, I'd bet on the cap or rotor. I had the top "button" break on a rotor in a delco distributor in my 550 and it acted the same way.
