Super 88 ring and pinion backlash?

Had to replace the left side bull pinion gear on my Super 88. Reading the shop manual it says the backlash on the ring and pinion gear is stamped on the gear. I found it and it reads .0088L. Sounds like backlash is supposed to be .0088" then. I was surprised there is no range on this value as that is what I was expecting, a max and min value. What is the tolerance on this backlash? I find it hard to believe they set them to an exact spec at the factory. Figure it would be +/- .001 or something. Thanks, Nate.

I just did mine, and it was the same way. I was able to get it very close. I didn't measure before I took it apart, but you probably could have measured it with a tape measure, and it had probably been that way for years. If you get it close it will be fine.

Thanks Josh, I put in new shims on the right side to adjust the end play of the differential but didn't do anything to the left side. (The thrust side is the right side so shouldn't have much if any wear on the left). The manual also lists .015-.018" gap between the pinion gears and differential gear. I measured .017" on the right side with a feeler gauge and checked the left side, it was .022". Likely been this way for a long time. I could pull it all apart but if my ring and pinion backlash and shaft end play measure right not sure I'm going to take apart the left side to reduce that by .004". I need to get a dial indicator and magnetic base to measure the end play and backlash. Thanks, Nate
