oliver 1850 over under cost

What's the most a guy can put into one. Found a
1850 diesel in decent shape partially torn down.
Says the clutch is bad but doesn't seem to know
much about it. I'm just seeing how much I can
pump into it without putting more into it than it's
worth. Those all had Perkins diesels correct?

Yes it has a Perkins. If he is saying the clutch is bad that has nothing to do with the over/under. He could've ment the over drive or direct drive clutch pack is bad. How much is he asking for it? And is the over under tore apart or he is still trying to get the engine out?

This pic is all I know. Said someone started
working on it and then they said it was going to
cost too much. They tell me the clutch is junk, but
I'm just wondering if there's more $$ to the story.
Going to look at it tomorrow. He doesn't seem to
really know much. He also says it's an oliver
diesel which would make it a 1855. Hoping he just
doesn't know it's a Perkins. Said it ran perfect and
has all the sheet metal. He doesn't even know if it
has over under. $1500 is his price.

That tractor does not have the Perkins!! Both intake and exhaust manifolds are on the right side of the head on a Perkins, engine shown is the Waukesha as it has a crossflow head..

If it's a 1655, are they worth getting? Have a bad rap like the 1855? Not an oliver guy at all. Shooting from the hip here.

Nick,if you don't want that, let me know would you? I'd like to have a 1655 with over/under to cut hay. I'd be interested for sure at that price.

OK,thanks. They didn't have the engine problems that the 1855 had. If you're thinking 1850,the 1655 might be a little bit smaller than you're looking for. They were 70 horse. Comparable to a 3020 Deere and, what,a 656 IH? They became the White 2-70 later on.
I don't know if you still have my email address or not,I hooked it up on this post.

The pedestal for the instrument column and steering wheel look like a 50 series. Looks like a 50 series hydraulic filter housing under the seat, didn't the 55's have a different set up than to 50 series? 1750 with a 55 series grill and decals?? Chris

Nick, buy that immediately. That has a 283 Waukesha, which was a very good engine. 1655 value has really increased lately. Would be a worthwhile investment.

Looks like a 1655 to me. I would take that tractor in a heartbeat at that price. I have a one of the last 1650 diesels built with a three speed and I love it. Has to be one of the best tractors ever built.

Was hoping for a few more ponies. Still would be a step yp from my massey 175. I'll see what it needs. Not necessarily in the market for another tractor, but you never know.

A 70hp tractor will run your discbine? The deere 920 I have made the 4320 (115hp)earn it's keep in a few first cutting spots last year. For the most part I could get by with less, but not that much. I figured a 1850 would do it if need be.

I don't know if it would run my 9 foot in all the first cutting or not. I'd be good in second and third cutting I think.

An 90hp 1850 would walk around a 115hp 4320 JD on a discbine, just cause the difference in the pto speed, the 1850 is 540 at 2400 rpm and the deere if I remember right is 1900 rpm for 540!

Looked up Nebraska tests. Made me curious. Says oliver 1850's@rated engine speed (2400 rpm) puts out 92.94hp. Didn't say at pto speed, maybe it's the same.

Deere 4320@rated pto speed (1900rpm) was 108hp.

They are more comparable than I thought, but doubt it'd "walk around it".

Randy, if I remember right you got the newer version of my FC283, if so a 1655 should run it. The first two years with my Kuhn 283, I did all the mowing with my 1655 and it handled it okay. I used third gear most of the time, I tried fourth a few times in lighter hay, it ran it, but ran hotter so I stuck to third. At the time my 1850 was idle with problems. Once I got that going again I've done the mowing with it, it handles everything in fourth gear easily. (I tried fifth in second crop one time, it was too fast, I was skidding on the corners. LOL ) The 283 I've got was rated 70 to 90 horsepower, so the 1655 works, but it's minimal. Two years ago when I was looking for a third tractor, (The 1850 turns 50 years this year, the 1655 turns 47 ) I found a 2-70 that has a Cummins repower (the 239ci four cylinder w/turbo. A year ago late in the season the 1850 blew a head gasket. I mowed one meadow of second cut with the 1655 and the rest with the 2-70 to see how it would handle it. It ran it noticeably easier than the 1655.

Was getting ready to leave work to look at it, called to say I was heading that way, and they just sold it.
