1750 - Explaination Needed

My 1750 has to be in neutral to crank the motor and I understand the reason for this. What I don't understand is how it works. I'm only bringing it up because the last few times I started tractor, the key remained in the "start" position unbeknownst to me. During this time, there was a strange noise coming from the tranny when the shifter was in neutral. If I wiggled the shifter either side of neutral, the noise stopped. I really thought the noise was a bearing. I figured it out when I killed the motor pushing snow. I shifted to neutral and it started on it's own. After I got the key to the correct position, the noise is gone.
Anybody know how this safety interlock works? Thanks

I think it just completes the circuit. When you move the shift from neutral it breaks the circuit. You can unplug the two wires from under the cowl and hook a jumper wire in to complete it and bypass the safety switch.
Sounds like either your key switch really was still in the start position or the solenoid was stuck. I think the noise in neutral was the starter spinning.

If I remember right from when I had my 1600 open, it's a simple switch that makes context and closes the start circuit when the shifter is in neutral. When it's in gear, the shifter isn't touching the switch do the start circuit is open.
