Preferred 265 / 283 cylinder head ??

New to Oliver tractors, working on a rebuild. I've learned that the 265 and 283 can both be made in the same block by changing sleeves and pistons. Which head from this family of engines is the best one to use, and which application was it used on? Why is one better than another? Larger valves, better flow?

I'm going to be working on a 265, may convert it to a 283. I do not have the casting numbers at this time. I'm trying to do some research before starting.

Let me ask you a simple question: Is your 265 a 4 main or a 7 main bearing block? FYI for you the valve arrangement for the 4 main blocks is not the same as the 7 main bearing blocks so cam would not be the same + the number and location of the head bolts is not the same either.

I believe it to be a 4 main engine. Numbers on the left rear of the block are 104305A, 190320N, 8170. The head is a 9 port.

Yes that is a 4 main block. How much money do you want to put into this project? There are over 20 1/2 inch bolts that hold the head on the block while there are only 14 9/16 bolts that hold the 12 port (on the 283 & 310 engines.

I'm not looking to break the bank on this project, but am willing to spend a little to make it a better running engine. Want to keep it appearing correctly too.
