Neighbor's 1655 row crop has a 3-speed. The last 3 digits on the serial number are 490. What do those digits mean, anyone know?

Oliver has had different transmissions/ring & pinion combinations for tractors. This includes rowcrops standards, industrial tractors, etc. When the super models were introduced in 1954 the last 3 numbers of the serial number indicated the gear combination for that tractor.

Mike, J. - was looking at All States Ag Parts Oliver Salvage for 1655s, looks like SN# xxx xxx 490 is common. Just wondered what it meant.

490 is the powertrain code for a Charles city built tractor that had the O/U drive aux.   Could have either been a Oliver/Cockshutt 1655 or a MM G 750.   Those without O/U were code 452.
