1855 Cessna Pump Seal

The lIttle Cessna gear pump on left side of my 1855 that circulates hydraulic fluid is leaking through the shaft seal. Anyone got a seal part number that I can cross over at napa or similar place? I bought a rebuild kit for it 15 years ago, but that outfit says they don't have them anymore and can't get them... If anyone has crossed a number or found something that works, I'd appreciate the insight.

The pump number is 24117 RAD.

Thanks!

Brad Maibach @ Maibach tractor told me that the pump you are referring to has a capacity of 2-4 g.p.m.. The case drain on the main hyd. pump has a "spill" of about 2-4 g.p.m., could the pump be eliminated & just run the spill through the cooler?

The original pump seal was part number 163 832A.  Later pumps used seal # 30-3081494, early seal subs up to the later part number.   30-3081494 seal is a captive part from Cessna #162 337 meaning you can only get it from Cessna.

The other part of your question: NO you can't eliminate the pump.   The pump also draws a small amount of oil & any accumulated air off of the top of the filter housing, thus without the pump the filter housing will build an air pocket and a slug of air will go to the main hydraulic pump.

The late production tractors had the cooler pump built into the drive assembly for the main pump, thus you may have seen a tractor without the belt driven pump.   The drive belt needs to be loosely tensioned as the pump shaft is supported by bushing instead of an antifriction bearing, the OP advises against too much belt tension.

I bet the seal is not the only thing that is bad. The bushings are probably worn, letting the shaft push against the side of the seal.
