Splitting the super 55' in half?

Looking to split my oliver 55 in half, now just what kind of jacks am I going to need? The clutch and disc along with the seal are in doubt of living much longer. I have a 10 ton jack and 2 1/2 ton floor jack, not sure if the the 2 1/2 ton floor jack will hold up the fwd. engine section. Just how heavy is a super 55 tractor, and I know the rear section is heavier. Need a little bail out here farmers. :?

That 2 1/2 ton jack will be just fine. The whole tractor only weighs 3700 lbs or so. That
is less than 2 tons. The z-split is pretty easy. A manual is helpful. But you basically
unbolt radius rods, remove 16 bolts attaching center frame together, then move the engine
part of the tractor away from the tractor center frame and transmission. If you use a jack
under the front section to roll it forward make sure to brace it and have help so it can
not tip over sideways. The manual suggests using a sling from above.
The link below gives clutch overhaul tips.
You can do it, have fun!

We always rolled the back away from the front so put the floor jack under the rear section. If you can find 2 jacks put them one on each side of the front section. Also later Super 55 tractors had a larger clutch than early ones. You have e-mail and or a phone number? there are other tips to doing this. J.

Plan on doing the PTO while you are in there. If it is currently leaking, the PTO is where it is coming from. You may want to buy a manual, as doing the PTO is way more complicated than just splitting the tractor. The Super 55 actually has two separate clutches, unlike Ford and their dual stage clutch. I have been putting mine off for years due to space to tackle this repair.

To keep it from tipping you can put some wood blocks under the front axle at both sides. The tighter the better between the axle and the frame. I have 2 super 55 tractors and use 1 for pulling. I have a later 550 transmission that has the slower 2nd gear and I switch the transmission/rear half depending on which track I am going to. They are really easy to switch. Good jacks and a smooth floor make the job easier. On your tractor clutch if the flywheel is drilled for a 10 inch clutch make sure to install a 10 inch even if the old clutch was a 9 inch assembly.

If you have leaks around the brake shaft, you will want to fix this also as you can't do it without splitting the tractor. Mine leaked so bad that there was no point in filling the transmission and using it. I had to build up and re-machine the shaft to get a good tight fit. Seals are available from Kevin Chavin at

Hasn't leaked a drop since fixed.

Well I'm back and appreciate all the replys, still not sure some of you are saying to roll the aft trans. side back or engine side fwd? Anyway thanks again there farmers. :D
