I own 1963 Oliver 1600 and I had the generator or ( ALTerator ) test to check for amp. it reads....35
I am not sure what is the good number for this tractor ?
This tractor has 12 Volt Battery, I am not sure if it is positive or Negative 12 Volt ?
How do I know which Positive or Negative
Thank you in advance

If it's original,it's a positive ground generator. Just look at the battery and see which cable goes to ground and which one goes to the starter. Can't help you on the voltage it puts out ahead of the regulator.

How was this 35 Amp number obtained? When the amp meter was hooked up was it on the tractor or on a tester in some one's shop? Do you have a Delco generator as was original or has some one converted it to an alternator? Is the generator steel or aluminum??

Back then, 35A was a massive output for a tractor generator. Many later alternators in the UK were derated for agricultural use (compared to automotive use). Think here a couple of 50W headlamp bulbs and possibly another amp for tail lights. That was about it unless a work light was added. 35A at not a lot over idle was more than enough, compared to the dynamo generators which needed high revs for full output. Things have changed a lot since then, of course.

I had someone tested the generator in the shop, it reads 35 amps. The generator is made of steel and believed it's origional, the MFG. name of generator is United Parts .

The generator I had it on the tractor 1963 Oliver 1600 gas engine and I am wondering if this older generator Mfg. name is United Parts is rebuildable by the electric shop ? or I better off to get the modern style Alterator as I seen some people switch the old generator to the modern Alterator. ?

Really Ok , I see the someone in the recently board I forgot his name, he said, " If it is orginal generator , it is positive ground generator " ? Mine is orginal generator as it is heavy and steel. So which of you is right

Regardless of generator, alternator, old, or new, if the negative of the battery goes to the ground (chassis), it is negative ground.
