Oliver 88 engine question

wis ol 88

New User
I just purchased a Super 88 with I believe a later model engine. I expect to need some parts, but would like to know what to expect before tearing tractor apart. The only numbers I can find are behind carb cast on block. 155119A, 190620, 1292
Can not find numbers supposed to be by right rear eng mount. Pictures of oil filter in front of dist, later style dist, later style dipstick, cause me to think it's a 1600 or newer engine ? Engine cranks fine, pistons move, nothing in valve train moves. Have you ever seen this problem ? Are they prone to broken camshaft ? Don't see how timing gear could come off or lose key ? Some of you pullers might of seen this problem. Thanks for any help.

Do all the pistons move? pull the front cover off and check the timing gears. either the crank or cam is broke or the cam gear is, could be the key is broken.

Crank an pistons spin freely, 3 an 6 have 100 lbs, rest O. Valve train doesn't move. Have several projects tore apart, don't want this one apart unless I can repair fast. Need to identify engine first, in case I need to locate a cam, etc. What are chances it's ONLY a key ?

as the 88 is an overhead valve engine, if the cam gear fails, and the engine is rotated the open valves will be
struck by the pistons. this will cause bent valves, or push rods.

Are all Oliver (Waukesha) engines interference engines or are some non-interference? I thought I'd heard they were non-interference, meaning the pistons will not hit the valves in case of valvetrain failure.

JM, I would say that most if not all the gas engines are non-interference and all the diesels are interference engines. I hope that's right, Chuck

Valves will not hit on this engine.

Finally found eng serial number by alternator. It is 36578
Head 190023
block casting 155119A
19062
1292
Hope someone can ID this engine.

If valves and piston interfere, then bent valves are likely on hemi-heads but with OHV up and down valves the most likely is bent pushrods. Even our OHC diesel 607 Peueot breaks
cam followers if the cam belt breaks (don't ask me how I know!).
