2-135 trade for a 1755

Hi guys,
I am looking for a little advice. I have a very nice 1755 diesel. The motor was just overhauled, the 3 speed never misses, the paint looks great. It has been a very good tractor to me. It just doesn't have the Hp I need for my soils. I have a gentleman that has has a 1978 2-135 that wants to straight up trade for my 1755. He want's mine to put a loader on. The issue is the condition of it. It has a cracked exhaust manifold, the ac doesn't work. The paint is ok The cab doesn't look too bad. The hour meter says 5400 hours, but doesn't work. The 3 speed shifts fine. Hydraulics work. The motor runs well. The rear tires are about 50% and the fronts are weather-checked, but hold air. My question is would you take on this deal or run away? I need the extra HP and it fits that bill. It is over all not in that bad of shape, but am unsure if this is a good tractor or not. Are the cabs in these very quiet? How long do the motors and 3 speeds last in these. Are 2-135's a good machine? Thanks for any and all advice.

2-135 tractors are decent tractors but not flawless. My biggest worry if it were me is I am going from a known tractor to an unknown tractor. Not too hard to drop 5K in a repair bill on one of those. Can you afford two or more repair bills of that size on a tractor? It might be better to pay more initially but have something you can be confident in if you do not feel like gambling on whether this White will hold up. There are low hour quality Whites out there if you can wait a bit. They are not priced like a Deere, either.

986, my thoughts resemble yours. I also think that guys who don't repair things, i.e., cracked exhaust manifolds, hour meters, often don't excel at preventive maintenance. gm

I have bought a lot of tractors through the years and I agree that if they don't fix the little things, they don't fix the big things. If they do have it apart, they cut corners. I used to buy tractors that just needed a little work and some cosmetics and usually lost money on them. I now try to only buy tractors that look and work reasonably good.

How many hours a year are you going to put on the tractor. Cracked manifold? They are not an easy change, is it over fueled? Boy I would see if I could test drive it and then make up your mind. We are at the point most of the tractors here except for the loader tractor are 130 horse power and up. The differential lock would be the big plus, so handy when you pull wagons in a wet fall.
