880 jumps out of gear

Doing a little plowing with a 1960 880 with Power Booster. Pulling a 3 bottom 4240 plow. Very hard black ground. Running 7" deep. In direct, the tractor will jump out of 2nd gear. If it is power booster...no issue. Thoughts?

i would check end play in all of your transmission shafts, bearings can really get loose with alot of hours on them

Tach shows about 3,500 hours. It has been redone. Do not know the history on it. It runs great has all kinds of power, but concerned over the gear issues.
When you stop under load, I cannot get it out of gear, unless I pull the Power Booster back, then it frees up. When you start under load, it will jump out of gear, unless the Power Booster is pulled back, then it is fine. Something is not exactly meshing up.
It only does it in 1st, 2nd, and 5th.

I think tonight, I will put the 88 back on the plow.

the 880 should handle a 3 bottom in 3rd easily or 4th and not being able to come out when stopped in a gear on the high side is normal just pull it back to low . the 2nd gear jumping out could be shift forks.

This is black muck and has not been plowed for years. It has plenty of power...no issues there. The hard part is keeping traction to the ground...tires are worn and it only has one set of weights.

Had a problem like that on my 770. Found a retaining clip that had broken and fallen off the shaft allowing gear to slide forward and disengage.

We just repaired my dad's 1968 770 with the same symptoms. It was the snap ring on the motor side of the pinion shaft had come out of the grove and allowed the gear to slide forward and back at the wrong time. Because it went on like this for a long time it rounded and wore off the snap ring groove on the pinion shaft. We ended up putting in a new ring gear and pinion and re-set up the transmission and rear end to factory specks. It shifts and runs great now. Common tools to do it except for a dial indicator and a Owatonna puller for the bull pinion splined shafts

My 880 did the same thing under pressure it would jump out of gear. I had to replace a bushing on the input shaft in the transmission . The bushing was about the thickness of a aluminum beer can it was made of some sort of fiber. It was worn out and allowing to much play on the shaft

When you have the tractor running and in neutral also place the gear shift in the low range neutral. That will extend the life of that bushing. The tractor in the question does have a pressure lube installed so that bushing is not used.

FYI for you or anyone else for that matter the bull pinion shafts can be removed without that puller and both axles do not need to be removed to remove the differential. Only the right axle does.
