1550 PTO Bearing Questions

Starting to put the pto back together and I'm wondering whether to pop the seals out of the bearings or leave them in. In the service manual cross section diagram, Figure E10-10-1, it looks to me like all of the bearings have the seals installed. However, in the other pics, the bearings all look open so I'm a little confused. What came apart was a mismatch of garbage from who knows how many previous iterations, so I'm hesitant to replace it as I found it.

Am I correct in thinking that the PTO housing unit is meant to be self contained, and therefore no oil transferring from the rear end into it and visa versa? Here are some pics of the test fitting on the bench. Appreciate any help from those who know how the bearings are supposed to go.

Mitch:   If you have major brand bearings with the seals, I wouldn't worry about them, put it together.
The top bearing in photo #2 extends into a machined area in the transmission housing for the front of that bearing.   Loosely install the four bolts that hold the PTO housing to the transmission case, then be sure the bearing is installed into both housings then tighten the bolts.
The PYO in this model has it's own oil reservoir, only holds about 1 pint as I recall, has a level plug on the side.
Don't think I need to tell you, however use good sealer on the cap on the front side of the lower shaft.

Thanks Duane. I've been wondering what sort of magic potion I would end up using on the cap to make sure it sealed up. It's too bad the PO used up all of the blue silicone left on the planet on all of the other areas on this tractor, I could have used a little on this cap!

When I went through mine I only replaced #7 and all the seals. Other bearings were OK to use. #7, seal to the back. #18 and #42 open on both sides. #22, open to the final drive housing. #18 has the oil drain hole. #20 snap ring has a bevel on one side. The bevel goes away from the inner race. Took me a while to figure out why the snap ring would not go in the groove.
