Super 55 gas 6V or 12V coil?

Neighbor called and said his 55 wouldn't start and he needs to move out of the barn for wedding. I found the coil separated (explains no spark) however I do not know if its a 6V or 12V. There's a 12V battery installed and the starter spins like a madman, also has an alternator instead of a genny. I'm thinking it needs a 12V coil since there is 12V battery voltage going to it. I'd appreciate your guidance.

Thanks. Dopp

12 volt battery and alternator indicates 12 volt. Unless specially modified alternator is negative ground.

I would get a 12 volt coil marked "no external resistor required" such as NAPA IC14SB or equivalent. It should have about 3 ohms resistance between + and -- terminals.

Install new coil with small -- terminal connected to side of distributor.

Is there a ballast resistor anywhere between the ignition and the coil?
If there is, and you install a 12v coil with an internal resistor, you need to remove the external one.
The points need to see 6 volts, or they will burn in short order.
I bought a Farmall Super C a few years ago that had 3 external ballast resistors in various places. It ran, but not very well.
