Oliver 1800 A

Looking at purchasing an 1800a. Any thoughts on what to watch out for and what people like about the 1800s. I know the steering is sloppy with the one I'm looking at. How difficult is it to repair? I've been told steering rebuild kits don't exist

Let me ask you what you intend to do with the tractor and how the tractor is equipped first. They were very good on gas. They were new when I new to Oliver's in the summer of 1960.

Hi.

We have the parts here on stock, for the Oliver 1800A tractor that uses the Gemmer PS Head that is mounted in the engine tub frame, under, in front of the rad.

Please let us know what you need. We have the o-ring seal kit, shaft seals, and much more.

1800 A can have a Hydra-Power drive, direct drive and under drive. It was not available when they were introduced but packages were available to add one to tractors in the field.

Well what do you have now for a tractor? Most likely the sloppy steering is a loose nut inside the unit. This allows the helical gears to have too much movement causing very loose steering. Look the tractor over good. You have e-mail? I could send you a list of what I would check besides the normal stuff.

I think this one is hydra- power since I've gotten a little more educated on it. There is a rod that pulls out and in on the lower right dash. Feel free to correct me as this model is new to me. It is a '62 according to serial number.

Thanks John I was not aware of this. Sure helps having a guy with your first hand knowledge on this stuff. Duane o

I have a 77 that I use to rake hay and pull wagons. This 1800 came up for sale near me so I'm going to try and buy it. Probably bigger than what I need but will be nice to have 3pt.

I bought the tractor the other day. The steering will turn the wheel about 3/4 to the right and all the way to the left. I can turn the steering wheel about 1 or 1 1/2 turn before the wheels start to move. When I lifted the front off the ground the wheels don't respond right away and cannot get to turn completely to the right(did this with engine off) I can grab the tire and complete a full turn right and left by hand. Is number 18 the nut that could be loose? What else could be the problem with the steering unit. It looks like a gemmer unit. I can get the unit almost out but having trouble sliding the tapered linkage bolt out.

This should be a link to the image

I looked again tonight with another person helping and as the steering wheel turns the steering arm does not turn until about 1 1/2 turns. The rod inside spins with the steering wheel, so I'm assuming the splines are bad on the vertical shaft going to the steering arm or the steering arm is stripped out. Should the shaft simply slide out with the Gemmer power steering unit?

The I &T manual doesn't mention or have an exploded view of the powersteering unit connecting to the front axle. To get the steering shaft out do I need to unscrew the bolt under the cap and slide it out?
