I had a roar when pto was running so I figured bad bearing...took everything out of tractor tonight..i cant get the clutch assy off of the main housing..do I have to take all the discs and things apart to get to the bearings on the actual shaft..rrlund had alluded to the springs being broken in the clutch pack most of the time and mine seem intact but perhaps weak?..are there any specs for tension on these?....the discs do turn when I spin the pto shaft but had lots of oil on them so need to clean all that...thanks for any replies and suggestions

Did you remove the 3 bolt bearing retainer behind the PTO clutch pack? It is not right in the open, its bolted to the pto assembly housing in front of the clutch pack.

Maybe this'll help. It's the 1550,but the same setup.

yes I took the ones out of the retainer that rrlunds pic shows but just the clutch assembly with pto shaft would not slide out of the cast housing..i just took it all off and placed it on the work bench but don't want to force anything and break it..what would be holding it together..i hate to pry on just the ears on that retainer your talking about..thanks for your reply

thanks for posting that pic..thats how I thought it should come out but something is holding it in the housing so I removed the whole housing and will have to get a brass drift and see if I can jar it loose with a hammer from the pto shaft side I guess..i also noticed new bolts and stuff in your pic...are they something you fabbed or are they something you ordered?..did you replace the springs also..im assuming that since your clutches don't look oil soaked like mine there is also a seal in there so will have to figure that out as well..thanks for posting the pic..am really anxious to get it on the brushog and use it..thanks again

The holes stripped out on mine and I had to tap them to a larger bolt. I didn't replace the springs, but should have. It makes quite a noise,so I just leave it engaged when not in use most of the time.

I've had good luck taking a heavy chain wrapping behind the clutch pack and using it like a slide hammer. Leave a couple ft. of slack and snapping it tight. Might take a few licks, but comes right out.

Gotta correct myself,I didn't tap those holes. I took the one off a parts tractor. It just has new bolts.

My 1550 PTO is disassembled and sitting on the floor right now, I think it's pretty similar to your 77, so if you need any photos taken, I'm happy to do so. If you look at the pics posted here, you can see the blue silicone on mine. There was supposed to be a gasket there, but the PO must have owned stock in the blue silicone making company. Anyway, mine was stuck in the housing pretty good as well. Let me know if additional photos would help.
