I have a oliver 550 gas backhoe 1960, my problem it sputters and misses when it is not under load, when it is working and pulling it runs good. I have looked at carb & dist with no luck, put new plugs in........thanks wayne

Did you check back-lash on the distributor drive? It may be the drive pinion is loose on the shaft?

Possibly play in the governor linkage?

Just a couple guesses.

An intake manifold leak will make them run poorly at idle while they may run good under load. At open throttle a large volume of air is pulled through the carburetor giving it plenty of air fuel mixture. At closed throttle there is a low volume of air pulled through the carb and high vacuum pulls raw air in through a leak giving it too lean of mixture to run properly.

My Super55 did exactly the thing. The fix was rebuilding the distributor. Before the rebuild and idling, the distributor cam would bounce around causing the points to not open, open at the wrong cam angle, stay open, and/or stay closed. When I grabbed the rotor it seemed to have 1/8" slop in the shaft bushing. The before and after difference was huge.

Good luck.
