Running rough

I have a 2-70 white with the 283 diesel. After running it about 3 hrs. it started missing and running rough. Also there was some gray smoke coming from the exhaust. I let it cool off and then I changed the fuel filter. It ran fine after that. I wouldn't be concerned except this has happened 2 or 3 times before. I don't think it was too hot but the temp gauge doesn't work.
I hope someone has an idea to fix the problem.

Thanks

i'd fix that temp. gauge asap good way to ruin an engine in short order.it is imperative you know what temp. your engine is running.just think a simple thermostat could ruin your engine and you wouldn't know it until too late!

Is the fuel tank full of crud or maybe water in the fuel? Could flush the tank out then if everything is clean and it keeps up, may need to start looking at the Roosa pump. There is a filter screen at the inlet line that may be clogging also. Beyond that could be possibly time for a pump rebuild.

If that screw is plugged your filters are not doing the job!. If you plug that filter that quick you have a lot of crud somewhere. How good is your transfer pump? The last place to look is in the injection pump!

I think the tank is pretty clean. I'll check the screen. I also have a new temp gauge and sending unit. Just haven't taken time to put it on. You're right. That needs done right away.
I used the tractor last night with no problem but it wasn't pulling as hard as it was when it started missing. Thanks for the suggestions.
