Oliver Tractors with engine side covers?

Hi all, was there a reason for the engine side covers other than making the tractor look nice and finished? I know many farmers removed them not sure if that helped with cooling or just better access to the engine.

My (somewhat educated - I'm a mechanical engineer) guess, it's got to do with heating and cooling of the engine. In cold weather, convective heat is trapped, so the engine warms more effectively.

In warm weather, the fan forces air through the radiator and out the vents, the restriction from the shields causes higher velocity, which means more cooling. Additionally, the shields act like a shroud, preventing air from getting sucked in from the sides and rear of the fan, instead, making it pull air through the radiator...

So, in winter, the convective heating keeps the engine warm and running good. In summer, it keeps air moving faster through the radiator. (The coolant needs to stay cool, not so much the other stuff in the engine compartment.) Notice how on the newer models, which have only partial shields, still have shields around the fan and radiator?

Just my thoughts.

We always took them off in the summer because they would run cooler. They were good protection for gas tractors in wet weather, kept the wires nice and dry. I think they had them to make the tractors look more streamlined and styled. Chuck

While I love the Fleetlines and their streamlined look, I believe the change was made to help keep the engine cooler. They also moved the muffler out from under the hood to above the hood. I believe these two changes enabled the Supers to run cooler. Even without the shields, the Supers and the three digits still had a very clean look.

IH brought back the side panels in 1981 with the introduction of the 50 series tractors and soon the industry was back to covering the engine.
