Rewire of Oliver 77 RC

I know this question has been asked before but I haven't found any definitive answers in the archives. I have a 1949 Oliver 77 RC gas tractor which had been used in the past for pulling. It only had a battery, starter, coil, and distributor. All the diagrams in my Oliver manuals and those on line are positive ground and most show how to convert to an alternator. I'm restoring this tractor to original condition except it will be a negative ground 12 volt system with a generator and 4 post voltage regulator. I have had the starter and a salvage generator rebuilt for 12 volt negative ground. The pulley is correct and I got a new wiring harness plus all new lights and wiring harness plus a new ignition switch etc. The only help I need is how to correctly wire the generator to the voltage regulator. The voltage regulator has four posts: F, Bat, L, and underneath the v/r what appears to be a ground for the Field. The generator has two posts: A and F. I have been researching the correct way and every time I think I have it figured out something doesn't look correct. I don't want to wire it wrong and have a fire or cook a couple of expensive parts. We had a friend burn up his Farmall antique when the V/R shorted out and it started a fire in the wiring harness. I know this isn't rocket science but I would like some confirmation of what is the correct way to do this restoration. Thanks for your support.

I can double check but the terminal under the regulator is for to the wire that goes to the A terminal of the generator. Do you have a wiring diagram for a 77? Your connections will be the same, being 12 volts does not change anything for what you are doing.

All the wiring diagrams are for positive ground and I would like to use negative ground. The voltage regulator is stamp for either negative or positive ground. When I bought the tractor it had negative ground. I guess I could restore it to positive ground and maybe some of the wiring diagrams in manuals would be easier to use. If the A terminal goes to the terminal under the v/r, then does the F terminal of the generator go to the F terminal on the regulator which would create an circuit from the armature through the brushes to the winding fields. If I can't figure out this negative ground route I will try to use a positive ground. Thanks for your input.

The only thing you need to change for the negative ground are the wires on the ammeter. The ones on the right terminal need to be switched to the left terminal and the ones that were on the left terminal need to now be on the right terminal. More questions?

No sir. I agree that is the best way to put me out of my misery and get it correct. I have a couple of old John Deere's that are positive ground and a old Ford car. Never did like positive ground but I'll get over it. Thanks for the help.

12V can be positive or negative ground. My 77 diesel 12+ with generator from factory, my Ford 2000 3cyl with generator 12- from factory. You should take your generator AND regulator to your local rebuilder and have him SET the voltage output. Even new items can be putting out wrong voltage. Customer came in complaining about his batteries boiling. Sent him to our guy, and his combo was putting out 20 volts.
