2-88 CONFUSED

WHITE88

I just picked up a White 2-88 tractor and bought a operator manual and I&T service manual....i want to change the trans oil do to the trans oil light coming on at idle ... after mowing....the operator manual said to use universal tractor oil.....the service manual said to use SAE 90 GL5

If I remember right the 2-88 had a common trans and hydraulic sump so would use the hydraulic oil. The older tractors like the 2-85 had different areas for the hydraulic and trans. This tractor ran the 80-90 in the trans and hydraulic for the rest. Where is your dip stick located, if it is high up by the rock shaft housing then it has two separate sumps, if it is lower then you have the common sump.

Transmission and differential should use hydraulic oil. You will check this on the right side of the PTO shaft, there should be 2 female hex plugs. Oil should run out of the top one. Fill this by the large plug on the top of the PTO housing. The hydraulics are checked and added to by the dipstick on the back of the hydraulic housing. Both systems take the same oil, but are still 2 different systems.

A BIG THANK YOU....Yes my hyd dip stick is up by the rock shaft ...and the 2 Allen plugs down on the right to check trans/diff oil level...it had universal tractor oil in it..i was having problem with the trans oil light coming on at idle...i ordered a oil psi gauge and checked the psi should be 8lb to 14 psi at 2400 rpm we have that psi so the oil light sender was lying to me...
thanks
