my new bale spear

Needed a bale spear for my 1610 loader I put on the 1600, so I did a little scavenging on the scrap wagon and came up with everything except the spears and the stock for the spacers. The spacers I got from the drop rack at work and wet had to buy the spears, but they're way better than anything I would have made from mild steel.

Good job. Wanna build another one? There are times it would be better to have a spear on the 1600 instead of the grapple.

torched them out. To get the spears straight I had a spot or 2 with a fair size gap to fill, but I got them pretty straight and it's just narrow enough to pick up skids too.

The spear turned out even nicer than I had hoped. I might move the outer brackets out just a hair yet because they rub a little bit on the arms, but all in all for something I did by the seat of my pants I'm happy.

Make that 2! I need something better then the king kutter spear I have, spears are to thick for the bricks my baler makes.

Funny story,a guy stopped here one afternoon. I'd seen him headed to the crusher with a load of iron, but he stopped back here with a Tarter three point spear, wanted me to give him $50 for it. I finally gave in. Before I could get it made over for the loader,he called me in a panic, wanted to know if I still had it,said he needed it back. He had broken the one on the skid steer at the place where he worked two miles from here. He said he'd give me $100 if I'd take a check. There was no way I was gonna take a check from him,but I told him $75 cash if he really needed it. He showed up with 70,said he'd pay me the other 5 when he got paid. I've never seen him again. Another neighbor said he didn't work there anymore either. Said he'd stolen a whole iron pile and hauled it in. I'd had a hunch he'd stolen that stuff from Jerry in the first place. It cost him $20 to get the spear back anyway.

I plan to, just needed it now and didn't have time to make one up yet. It's not too often we really need a spear so for now this'll work. Probably work better once I fix dad's loader tractor. We've got a spear that fits that one too but it didn't work to well. May need some re-engineering.

I've got one that's made for the quick attach,so it'll fit either loader. When I've got the 1365 in the field loading,I have it on that. The grapple is the only way to go when I'm stacking bales four high in the barn, but when I get near one end,I can only go three high, and when I'm sitting them on the ground outside too,a spear would be faster than the grapple. I have to wait for it to open and close on the bales, take a little more time getting it down over the bales, etc. It's not a lot of extra time, but when you figure 12 bales to a load, seven or eight loads a day,it all adds up.
